Poems in Spanish

Art●is●Ann

Arte*es*Ana (Art*is*Ann) is a highly rhythmical, stirring dance-poetry presentation of a poem Maria Mar wrote as an homage for an old seamstress. Doña Ana, long time resident of the Lower East Side, had carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of the many years working as a seamstress. She reminded Maria of her grandma, also a Puerto Rican seamstress.

Arte*es*Ana captures the experiences of immigrant Puerto Rican women who came to the USA and found work in the infamous sweat shops. It also depicts the heroic struggle of all immigrant women workers to sustain their families in a strange, new country.

In this poem, Maria Mar uses musical references to establish the change of time in the progression of the story. She uses

bullet

Bomba, an Afro-Puerto Rican dance rhythm,

bullet

Danza, a traditional Puerto Rican dance

bullet

Merengue, a Dominican dance

bullet

and other Latino dances and rhythms

as part of the rich historical and popular references to the Puerto Rican and Latino culture.

Also available as a recitation with music (no dance).
