Letter from a Teacher in a Bilingual Program February 1, 1987 I first worked with her (María Mar) in P.S. 98, where we developed a solid poetry workshop and together with the teachers, she provided the students with a fine performance and a “Poetry Graduation.” That year she got book donations as prizes for the best poets in the workshop.*
Ms. Mar is a good poetry teacher. She has a deep respect for the feelings and well-being of the students, which is an important quality in any educator. She forms a team with the teachers and we work along fine, joining resources to create a learning experience that advances the students’ understanding of language, culture and of themselves as well. My experience with Ms. Mar has been a positive one, and I hold her as a professional and caring educator. | FROM ARTS PARTNERS TO MARÍA MAR June 4, 1986 Dear María: I just want you to know how much I enjoyed observing you work with students in Ms. Lawrence’s class at PS 51 on May 30th. Your ability to engage the students in creative poetry was only surpassed by your personal magnetism in commanding their attention in none less than 96 fiery degree weather on a Friday afternoon! I also want you to know how delighted we are that you are a part of the Arts Partners program. Your outstanding reputation from work in other districts had preceded my visit to District 2, and I am now pleased that my schedule finally coincided with yours.
