LifeBites: On Stage

PBS- featured author, performer and shaman Maria Mar uses poetry, dance-theatre and shamanic tools to present mirrors of today's current problems and offer easy, do-able solutions.

Maria Mar's LifeBites are the encapsulated, modern version of a shamanic healing ceremony in the ancestral communities.

Maria embodies the problem and uses movement, voice and poetry to condense it, powerfully moving the audience.

Then she embodies the solution, again using art to strike a chord in each person's heart. She then engages the audience in participatory "rehearsals" of these new solutions.

In Maria Mar's LifeBites: On State, the spectators become SpectActors, and acting becomes a rehearsal of new ways of living.

The audience is encouraged to do a physical, simple activity that serves as a catalyst for change. Freedom, relaxation, a change of perspective, expanded vision, humor and hope are the end results.

Maria Mar is a master improvisational actor with more than 20 years of experience. She is the creator of her own modern shamanic theatre methodology, Theatre of Transformation(TM), featured in Puro Teatro: A Latina Anthology, published by the University of Arizona Press. She engages audiences quickly and has the ability to generate participation in a safe creative environment.

This performance is a hands-on exploration of the the fear-response that leads to stress. Maria Mar used dance-theatre and poetry to offer a mirror of what happens to the body during a stressful response. She engages the audience in recognizing the physical symptoms. She then helps the audience "unwind" with a relaxing, graceful "tiny dance" that relaxes the body, deepens breath and opens the flow of energy. In this compelling performance, Maria Mar uses dance, theatre and poetry to portray how women often push themselves to use the available patriarchal models of power as control and exclusionary power, resulting in the violation of their own organic Female Power. This is a strongly visual, plastic and visceral presentation of the emotional invisibility women experience in a world that defines power as control and renders them invisible and the amazing power released when a woman re-defines power using her organic nature: relationship, emotions, empathy, connection, environmental receptivity, grace, beauty, collaboration and synergy.
